IT IS MORE BLESSED TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE
The Lord Jesus taught that giving is a deeply blessed experience: “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). Giving reflects God’s very nature. The Father gave His Son, the Son gave Himself, and the Holy Spirit continually gives to us. This divine pattern remains unchanged, and we are called to “be imitators of God” (Ephesians 5:1).
WE BELONG TO GOD
Before we give anything to God, we must understand that He first desires us. Not only do our possessions belong to Him—we ourselves belong to Him.
“…you are not your own; for you were bought at a price” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).
We are God’s purchased possession. The Macedonian believers demonstrate this beautifully. Though in deep poverty, they gave generously because “they first gave themselves to the Lord” (2 Corinthians 8:5).
Giving begins with surrender. Without a right relationship with God, even our offerings lose their value. Scripture reminds us that obedience is greater than sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22), and reconciliation must come before worship (Matthew 5:23–24).
HOW MUCH SHOULD WE GIVE?
Everything ultimately belongs to God. We may manage resources, but we do not own them.
We possess, but God owns.
We earn, but God enables.
We are His, and all we have is His.
In the Old Testament, giving included the tithe as a starting point (Malachi 3:10). In the New Testament, giving is guided not by fixed amounts but by principle:
“Let each one give as he has decided in his heart…” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
Giving should be willing, thoughtful, and proportionate to what God has provided (1 Corinthians 16:2).
PRINCIPLES OF CHRISTIAN GIVING
Give sacrificially
True giving costs something. As David said, “I will not offer… that which costs me nothing” (2 Samuel 24:24).
Give responsibly
“Do good to all people, especially… the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10).
Give compassionately
Neglecting those in need is a serious failure. Jesus taught that what we do—or fail to do—for others reflects our response to Him (Matthew 25:41–46).
God is compassionate, and He calls us to reflect that compassion.
GIVING AND RECEIVING
Giving and receiving are inseparably linked:
“Give, and it will be given to you” (Luke 6:38).
“One gives freely, yet grows all the richer…” (Proverbs 11:24–25).
Generosity does not diminish us—it enriches us. Tight-fisted living, on the other hand, ultimately leads to loss.
A CALL TO SELF-EXAMINATION
Following Christ is a costly, unselfish calling. It demands honest reflection:
Am I truly committed to following Christ?
Is self-denial evident in how I care for others?
Is my walk with God consistent and real?
“For God so loved… that He gave” (John 3:16).
We are called not merely to receive, but to give.
So, the question remains: What are we giving?
